Preparing Your Home Before Your Baby Arrives
Give your “nesting” a safe purpose!
With a baby on the way, it can feel like you have a million things to do in preparation. There’s definitely a lot to keep in mind, but we’ve put together a helpful list of easy things you can do to make sure your home is safe and ready for the little one to arrive. And if you’re looking for a stylish way to make your home a little safer for your baby, look to Jamboo Creations.
Give the house a safety exam
Even though it’ll be a little while before your baby is crawling around the house on its own, it is very important you are aware of safety hazards in your home. We previously covered some surprising ones, but another you may not think of is the cabinets under your sinks. Quite often, this is where toxic cleaning chemicals are stored. Luckily, magnetic locks for cabinets can be found pretty easily and ensure no wandering hands end up somewhere they aren’t supposed to be. They’re quite simple to install and don’t have the danger of pinching your fingers like baby locks of the past had. Understanding problem areas in your home and how to make them safer can prevent disaster. This is also a good time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they’re in working condition.
Keep it clean
While you might think the areas of your home with the most germs would be doorknobs and light switches, that would be wrong. Kitchen sinks, sponges, faucet handles, countertops, and toothbrush holders have been shown to be the germiest in the house. Prior to bringing baby home, make sure everything has been cleaned and sanitized. A newborn is coming from a very clean environment in a hospital, and sudden exposure to large amounts of germs can cause illness when their immune system has not developed yet. It’s a good practice to keep some sanitizing wipes near any problem areas so they can be wiped down regularly.
Reorganize your kitchen
When the baby comes home, you’re going to need room for a bottle rack or even a baby-food maker if you plan on preparing their meals at home. This is a good time to clear out some of the clutter and put some underused appliances into storage. You’ll need to make some room in your fridge for formula or breast milk as well. When you’re doing this, it’s advised that you perform similar sanitization of the refrigerator. After all, the baby’s food is going to be in there, so you certainly wouldn’t want it commingling with germs and rotten food particles.
These are just a few of the preparation steps we recommend and we’ll be discussing more of them in the near future. We think you’ll find that with a little planning and a little elbow grease, you’re going to have a home ready for your baby to grow up in.
